Great Migration

Migration - Migration refers to directed, regular, or systematic movement of a group of objects, organisms, people, or animals

National Geographic currently is presently airing on their cable TV series ‘Great Migrations of the World’.  Fascinating series!   The latest issue of the National Geographic magazine is also devoted to the great migrations.

As a child the magazine was a long awaited delivery each month bringing adventures to one whose world was a mere drop in the vastness such as Africa, South America, and Europe.  Even today as I hold in my hands the last issue I travel the world without leaving the comforts of home.

At one time I own a collection of early National Geographic Magazines from the 20’s and 30’.   Each magazine filled with rich photos and wonderful stories of far off places.  Today the magazine is smaller, not as thick and has more advertising but the photos and stories are still as rich and entertaining as the pages of long ago.  It is the only subscription we have kept.  With the age of online reading and many magazines losing their appeal over the years – I can say National Geographic only becomes more thought-provoking.

When I first started out in photography; learning how cameras work and how one goes about developing film into prints my dream was to become one of National Geographic photographers.  I remember telling my sister so many years ago “They don’t even have to pay me so that I can travel and take photos for them.”  Yes, I’ve always been a dreamer and one filled with fantasies.

My own life has been one long migration.  I began life in one state, traveled to another growing, then moving on to another place where I settled for a time having children, then moving once more following an ancient trail to the most northern western state.  I can’t say if my migration is over or still progressing.  I still have places to visit and that draw me to them; thank goodness for the monthly delivery of National Geographic it helps to keep me grounded.
